The capital of Honduras was founded in 1578 by Spanish settlers and became the country’s capital in 1880. The city’s name is said to be derived from the Nahuatl word Taguz-galpa, which means hills of silver. It has a colonial centre of silver and gold mining and has a diverse light industry. The old part of the town has retained many of the colonial aspects.
